Ford takes glimpse
into future
By Josh Gajewski
UH star recruit Alton Ford caught his first action of the season Thursday night at Hofheinz Pavilion and he picked quite a game to attend. The 6-9, 260-pounder from Milby saw a thrilling show in which a late UH comeback-effort failed in a 77-67 loss to the Cincinnati Bearcats, the nation's top-ranked team. "It's rough sitting in the stands," Ford said. "I feel like I want to get in there and play right now." The Bearcats were one of many teams who heavily pursued Ford, who also considered Duke and North Carolina among his final choices. "I felt like we have the talent right here in Houston to get it done," Ford said. "And playing for one of the 50-greatest players of all time (UH head coach Clyde Drexler) can do nothing but help you." Ford, who was listed among the nations top-10 recruits and was arguably the best big man available, is continuing his strict weight regimen while at Milby and is still improving on his intimidating size, which is sorely needed in the UH lineup after the offseason loss of William Stringfellow. "College basketball is a whole other level," Ford said. "Everyone is bigger, faster, stronger and better. I'll be ready." UH's lack of presence inside has resulted in a tailspin as of late. The Cougars have dropped 12 of their last 14 contests which includes a current losing streak that stands at seven. As for what he'll bring to the 2000-2001 edition of the Cougars, Ford
said: "rebounding and most importantly -- wins."
