Peaceful protest: Local adherents of the spiritual
movement known as Falun Gong have been holding daily protests outside theChinese
Consulate on Montrose Boulevard. The Chinese government began a crackdown
on the movement two years ago, which has resulted in its being virtually
eliminated inthat country. The government has also been accused of trying
to convince officials in U.S. cities not to recognize the movement.
U.S. Secretary of Education Rod
Paige and Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Houston) toured UH on Saturday
to get a first-hand look at the damages to the campus caused by flooding
in Tropical Storm Allison, and the University's efforts to recover.
Calm has finally been restored
to the city of Genoa, Italy, but the debate is just beginning to heat up
on the topic of missile defense. Recently, China and Russia voiced unified
opposition to President Bush's plan for missile defense, and several European
nations have also voiced concerns.
Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes
is one summer movie I really wanted to like, for this simple reason: The
original 1968 film, which I saw on television as a kid, was the first non-Disney
movie that really blew me away.
The 2001 football season is around the corner and Conference
USA is gearing up. As the teams prepare for practice, the coaches sent
in their votes for the 2001 C-USA All-Conference squad.
