Pads and helmets aren't necessary for those
wanting to get in on the Bayou Bucket festivities.
The annual gridiron classic pitting intracity
rivals Houston and Rice will be preceded by the first annual Bayou Bucket
Shootout, held Aug. 31 at the Sienna Plantation Golf Course
in Missouri City.
Cougars and Owls will be represented by
36 two-person teams, with teams competing against the rivals' representatives.
This is a match-play rules competition, much like the
Ryder Cup format.
Each winning team helps earn its school
one point. A tie garners 1/2 point. The winning school at the end of competition
receives a traveling trophy (much like the Bayou Bucket
prize).

UH and Rice fans can drop
a few dollars while sinking their putts in the first annual Bayou Bucket
Shootout on Aug. 31. The fund-raiser will help refurbish area high school
weight and locker rooms and provide money for scholarships in preparation
for the UH-Rice football game on Sept. 1.
Spots in the shootout go for $150 per
person, with proceeds going to the Touchdown Club of Houston's Inner City
Weight Room Refurbishing Fund -- a fund that aids in upgrading
high school weight and locker rooms. Proceeds
also go to the club's scholarship fund.
Deadline for entry is Aug. 17. Contact
the club at (281) 754-4867 or e-mail HouTDClub@houston.rr.com for more
information.
The actual Bayou Bucket game is at 7 p.m.
Sept. 1 at Robertson Stadium. Rice won the 2000 contest 30-27 in overtime
at Rice Stadium. Houston leads the series, 18-6, dating back
to the Southwest Conference. UH and Rice
were the last two SWC schools to compete in the league's final season of
football competition in 1995, with the Cougars beating the
Owls 18-17.
