Blue October pleases hometown crowd

Disco Volante

Christine McCreary

The place to be Saturday night was the Engine Room. Blue October, originally from Houston but now residing in San Marcos, put on an amazing show, playing to a packed venue.

Taking the stage around 11:45 p.m., Blue October played more than 20 of its songs. Old favorites were interspersed with a few new songs such as "Amnesia," "HRSA," "Breakfast After 10" and "James," which are featured on the band's major label debut, Consent to Treatment.

Justin Furstenfeld, lead vocalist/guitarist, sang with all the passion and raw emotion fans have come to expect from him. Like an open book, Furstenfeld holds nothing back as he sings poetic, heart-felt lyrics while taking the listener on a journey into his soul.

Though its sound is mainly modern rock, Blue October also incorporates elements of art rock into its music with Ryan Delahoussaye's melodic violin and backing vocals.

With his charismatic performance persona, Furstenfeld at times seems to be on the verge of a breakdown. He has the power to capture the listener in such a way that one can live his life vicariously through the songs.

So what's in store for the local scene in the next two weeks?
