Golfers finish seventh
in Arizona

The UH men's golf team finished in seventh
place at the Ping U.S. Collegiate Championships in Tucson, Ariz., on Sunday.
The 54-hole tournament was played Friday,
Saturday and Sunday at the 7,094-yard, par-72 Tucson National Golf Course.
The Texas Longhorns outpaced the 10-team
field by shooting a three-day total of 859, which was five under par.
The Cougars ended the tournament 23 shots
out of the lead with a tournament total of 882, 18 over par.
Sophomore Kevin Hermis fired a career-best
66 in the opening round of play to lead the Cougars into second place after
the first day of action.
Heading into the second round, the Cougars
trailed the Longhorns by just one stroke.
Over the next two days, the Cougars steadily
slipped down in the standings. Despite strong rounds from sophomore Scott
Ferguson, the Cougars
struggled mightily with the high Arizona
winds.
With gusts soaring to 35 miles per hour
Saturday, team scores skyrocketed. The Cougars were no exception, posting
a mediocre 602 for the last two
days of play.
Ferguson led the way for the Cougars, shooting
a three-day total of 217. He finished ninth in the individual standings.
Hermes and junior Simon Robinson finished
tied for 13th place with totals of 219.
Sophomore Brad McIntosh finished in a four-way
tie for 16th place with a tournament total of 220.
Oklahoma State's Hunter Mahan took home
the individual title by posting a 12-under-par 204.
The Cougars will next be in action Friday
when they return to Arizona for the ASU Thunderbird invitational in Scottsdale.
