Cougars beat 49ers at C-USA Championships

The No. 4-seeded UH women's tennis team defeated No. 13 seed Charlotte
in the first round of the Conference USA championships Thursday. The Cougars
took down the 49ers 4-3. Two three-set victories helped propel the Cougars
past Charlotte and into the second round of the Conference USA championships
in Fort Worth.
The win raises the Cougars' record this season to 10-11.
Playing at the No. 1 spot, junior Jen Baccarani beat Charlotte's Lauren
Swain 7-6, 4-6, 6-2.
Senior Jo Keene also prevailed in three sets, winning 6-1, 0-6, 6-3
over Alice Hansen. Keene was playing at the No. 2 position.
Junior Analia Longoni, at No. 3, had just won the first set 6-0 when
Charlotte's Jana Cucciniello was forced to withdraw.
Senior Kailey Meisinger, at the No. 4 spot, won a marathon match over
Jennifer Hatch 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
Freshman Kandace Ridgeway, playing at the No. 5 spot, fell to Lauren
Hastings 6-3, 6-0 in straight sets.
Baccarani and Keene, teaming up at the No. 1 spot, could not defeat
the 49ers Hansen and Swain, falling 8-5 in the match.
Meisinger and Longoni were leading Hastings and Hatch 6-5 when play
was stopped. Houston had already secured the dual match victory.
The Cougars will face No. 5 seed Tulane at noon today.
