Columnist gives last hurrah
'til fall
Joshua Delano
What have I learned this semester at Cougar
High — uh, I mean, UH? I've learned that it's good to keep your friends
close and your enemies
closer. Likewise to listen to those who
are on the opposite side of the spectrum from you. To listen to all views
and then form your own is to
become wise. Only a fool will block all
others out and think he or she is always right.
Passion is what drives each of us in our
lives to whatever goal we strive for. Let passion push you to succeed and
never give up on whatever it is
you want to be or do in this life that
has been given you.
I've learned from other columnists as well
as from professors who are Marxists or liberal, socialist or, well, I don't
know if colleges allow
conservative professors. If there are
any undercover conservative professors, I've learned from them, too.
I am happy to see that the right man got
the job of Summer and Fall 2002 editor in chief, yet am somewhat saddened
since I was planning to
protest if he didn't.
This semester has caused me to grow in
that I've gotten more involved on campus and gone to observe many groups,
their opinions and zeal
for whatever they stood for.
Likewise, I've been enlightened by the
unjust world in which we live. Still I am a patriot and know our country
is a beacon of strength and power
for much of the world. Many people down
the country in which we live because they can. We are not perfect as a
country or as individuals. We
can simply look at Student (Gestapo) Government
Association and see that all governments are corrupt in some way. Next
semester it seems
SGA will inspire much of my writing.
I'd feel somewhat alone in my conservative
writing stance without my fellow partner in truth, Matthew Caster, whom
I've appreciated and looked
to for help and inspiration this year.
Our fight against apathy and the lies of liberalism was a good one, bro,
and I will continue to press on, as I
know you will.
I would like to thank my editors Cara Sarelli
and Nikie Johnson for allowing me to express my views, and I appreciate
the great job they do day in
and day out at the paper. I look forward
to working with Keenan Singleton, as I know he is the right one for the
job.
Thanks to all of you who have filled my
inbox with your criticism and thanks —the thanks were far more than the
criticism, even though from the
letters to the editor you'd think it was
the opposite.
Also I appreciate Quannel X and Jesse Jackson
for always being readily available punching bags of hypocrisy and bigotry.
My hope is that my writing will influence
many to strive for something different — unity and love for every man and
woman. We should all find
what it is about us, our souls, and search
them to realize that we are all the same. We should never be biased so
much one way or the other
that we aren't able to point out hypocrisy
and see the most important thing: truth.
It is my hope to influence students by
speaking about all things, though some may be considered offensive, to
raise the level of awareness and
bring us together by realizing our differences.
Most importantly, we are all tied together
by a desire for life and to do the best we can with it. I am a seeker of
justice and of truth and will
continue to be in the future in politics
and the practice of law.
I hope that my fellow students and countrymen
will do the same and seek justice and truth in all things.
