Sports Cougars keep ball rolling Cougar Sports Staff The Cougar softball pitching tandem of Jamie Falco and Jenny Johnson were at it again Wednesday night, sweeping Texas-Arlington in a doubleheader at the Cougar Softball Complex.
Junior catcher Arelis Ferreris and the Cougar softball team continued their winning ways as they swept the Texas-Arlington Mavericks in a double-header Wednesday to improve to 22-12. Brian Viney/The Daily Cougar The UH pitchers tallied 20 strikeouts in the 4-1 and 3-0 wins, rolling to a 22-12 record (6-0 in Conference USA play) and snapping the Mavericksi (19-11) eight-game winning streak. UH has won 17 of its last 21 games since beginning the season 5-7. Johnson pitched a one-hit shutout in the nightcap, striking out 11 batters and improving her record to 7-5. The junior from Huntsville, Ala., kept the UTA bats quiet for the 3-0 win while the Lady Cougar offense did the rest. Sophomore Kristen Glowacz went 3-for-3 and notched two singles and a triple, including two RBIs. Despite going 0-for-2 at the plate, sophomore Jeanie Davis, who leads the team in batting average (.370), began the scoring with a sacrifice fly. Junior Lindsay Durham, sophomore Jenilee Skender and freshman Jaci Gonzalez each hit a single. Lady Maverick freshman Jill Garro struck out one and allowed seven hits, moving her record to 6-7. In the first game, junior outfielder Candis Turnbo and catcher Arelis Ferreris worked the Cougars to a 4-1 lead while Falco handcuffed the Mavericks at the plate. The ace allowed five scattered hits and struck out nine. Falco improved to 10-4 on the season. It was her ninth complete game of the season. UTA junior pitcher Katy Cox had trouble keeping the ball away from the Cougar bats, allowing four hits. Cox is now 13-4 for the season. In the sixth inning, Ferreris knocked out her fifth homer of the season, giving the Cougars a 4-1 lead. Before Ferreris dealt a blow to the Lady Mavericksi chances of coming back, Turnbo belted her first homerun of the season to give the Lady Cougars a 2-1 lead. The round-tripper was the Pearland nativeis fifth of her career. The Cougars will next travel to the land of milk and honey, Austin. UH will face No. 4 Texas, which is coming off a 5-3 loss against Hawaii, at 6:30 p.m. at McCombs Field in Austin. The Longhorns (22-5) will counter the Cougar offense with its pitching staffis combined 0.77 ERA.
