Arts & Entertainment Dresden brings its redefined style to Austin By Cara Sarelli
In their second release on Omaha, Neb.-based Saddle Creek Records, Sorry About Dresden finely tunes its style with Let it Rest. The bandis first release on the label, The Convenience of Indecision<P>, displayed the problem that most musicians have -- trying to develop their own personal form of expression. But Let it Rest, released last week, demonstrates artistic maturity with its solidarity in a work clearly reminiscent of classic favorites such as The Clash and Green Day. The album is a tightly-sealed success with its combination of vocal harmonies, catchy rhythm guitar riffs, melodic, sometimes folky interludes and driving, perfectly timed drumbeats. In 1997, Matt Oberst (vocals, guitar), who grew up in Omaha, formed the band in Chapel Hill, N.C., with Matt Tomich, Eric Rhoehrig (vocals, guitar) and James Hepler (drums). Six months later SAD played its first gig in Chapel Hill. The band has since recorded a few EPs, split albums, songs on compilation albums and one other full-length album (The Mayor Will Abdicate on Route 14 Records) and, of course, its Saddle Creek releases. SADis ties to the Omaha label may be what initially attracts potential fans: Matt is the brother of Conor Oberst, famous for his creation of the band Bright Eyes and his ability to rock out his political and social frustration in the collaboration Desaparecidos, both of which are on Saddle Creek. But SADis apparent commitment, talent and friendly garage-band feel are enough to maintain and expand its large following. SAD is on tour to kick off the latest release. Check the band out live at Emois in Austin on Sunday night. For details, visit www.emosaustin.com. To purchase Let it Rest, shop online at www.saddle-creek.com or go to the show.
