SPC votes to extend yearbook editor application deadline

Cougar News Staff

The Student Publications Committee approved a motion Thursday to push back the Houstonian editor in chief application deadline to April 4.

The vote came to the table after SPC President Matthew Caster informed the committee that due to an oversight, there had been no applicants for the position of editor in chief of the Houstonian by the original due date. According to the Student Publications bylaws, the deadline for applications is the first Friday in March.

At Casteris recommendation, the committee voted to extend the deadline to the first Friday in April, which is also the deadline for applications for editor in chief of The Daily Cougar.

Committee members also agreed that more notice should be given for such deadlines.

Dick Cigler, director of Student Publications, spoke for advertising manager Delores Crawford, who could not attend the meeting. Cigler said the Wedding Guide published Wednesday in The Daily Cougar was a success. The paper will publish one more special section this semester, the Graduation Guide, which should come out the last week in April.

Cigler also said that advertising revenues for the 2003 fiscal year have returned to the levels they were at four years ago. Fiscal year 2002 was the worst year for The Daily Cougaris advertising revenues in the last four years. This year, the revenues are $52,383 ahead of last yearis.

Ashley Grubbs, editor in chief of the Houstonian yearbook, said that she held a staff meeting earlier in the week to address some problems the yearbook had been having. Houstonian staff will have a "state of the yearbook" meeting Monday to share information about its progress.

Grubbs said the yearbook should be completed by early June.

Cara Sarelli, editor in chief of The Daily Cougar, said that things at the newspaper have been going more smoothly than earlier in the semester, when understaffing made things difficult.

For the first time, the committee met in the UC Satellite, where future meetings could likely take place.

The next meeting of the SPC will be 4 p.m. Thursday, April 10, and is tentatively scheduled for Room 110 of the UC Satellite. At that meeting, the committee will select the editors in chief of both The Daily Cougar and the Houstonian.
