Cougars try to regroup in Arizona

Cougar Sports Staff

The Cougar golf team has had more than a week to think about its last-place finish at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate in Austin. The Cougars posted a final round score of 302 to slip from 10th to 18th on March 18, and ended with their worst showing of the 2002-i03 season.

Senior Simon Robinson and the UH golf team will travel to Tucson, Ariz., to compete in the U.S. Collegiate Championships.

But if playing against the best has raised its level of play, the team will have a chance Sunday to show that Morris Williams was an aberration when it heads to Tucson, Ariz., to participate in the U.S. Collegiate Championships at the Tucson National Golf Course. The par-72, 7,138-yard course was also used for the Chrysler Classic.

The 14-team tournament will feature nine schools ranked by the Golf Coaches Association of America: No. 3 Texas Christian, No. 6 Arizona, No. 7 Nevada-Las Vegas, No. 8 Texas, No. 11 Minnesota, No. 16 New Mexico, No. 19 Northwestern, No. 21 Washington and No. 25 Southern California. Aside from the Cougars, Alabama, Arizona State, Kent State and Tulsa are slated to compete.

The Longhorns are the defending tournament champions.

The teams will play 18 holes each day until Tuesday.

Swimming camp

Students with children will have the opportunity to let a Division I-A head coach turn their tykes into the next Yulia Pakhalina.

The UH Swimming and Diving Program and Houston Cougar Aquatic Sports are partners in the first annual Fast Star Swim Camp. The camp, to be led by UH swimming head coach Mark Taylor and HCAS coach Mark Cresswell, will consist of two sessions.

The first session (April 7-11) is for children ages 10 to 14 and costs $100. The second session (April 14-17) is for children ages five to nine and costs $80. Both sessions are from 5 to 7 p.m.

For more information, call Taylor at 713-743-9373 or Cresswell at 713-939-9364.
