Sports Men's team finishes in 2nd place Cougar Sports Staff They didnit win, but when one factors in the level of competition, runner-up isnit anything to snicker at. The UH menis track and field team had the Cougarsi best showing during the Texas Relays in Austin on Saturday.
Senior sprinter Robert Foster finished the 100-meter dash in sixth place at the Texas Relays in Austin. The Cougars will next compete in the Louisiana State Alumni Gold Invitational. Pin Lim/The Daily Cougar The 4-by-100-meter relay team finished in second place with a time of 39.28 seconds. Sophomore Andrew Carruthers recorded his best time of the season in the 400-meter hurdles. He finished in third place with a time of 50.53 seconds. Senior Robert Foster was sixth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.32 seconds. The Cougars next travel to Baton Rouge, La., to participate in the Louisiana State Alumni Gold Invitational on Saturday. Baseball Never mind the Rice Owls another Houston college team is starting to rack up the wins. Theyire not the darlings of the Houston Chronicle, but Cougars have finally gotten above the .500 mark, thanks to a three-game sweep of the Alabama-Birmingham Blazers. The Owls are No. 1 in the nation, but the Cougars are No. 1 in our hearts. UH next hosts Southwest Texas State at 7 tonight at Cougar Field. Junior pitcher Gene Flores will start. Softball The Cougars were shelled in a three-game sweep at the hands of DePaul on March 29 and 30, but they showed that nothing cures the ailments of a sore team like winning a conference series. UH won the weekend series against the 49ers in Charlotte, N.C. Had it not been for a giveaway loss in Game 1, the Cougars couldive swept the series. UH (26-17, 8-4 in Conference USA) will next host the Alabama-Birmingham Blazers on Saturday (a doubleheader) and Sunday (a single game). Tennis They donit get a lot of publicity, but at least the UH tennis team has class. The same canit be said about the Texas Tech Red Raiders. While the 2-10 Raiders should be used to losing, it seems they were unhappy about falling to the unranked Cougars. Tech players threw hissy fits and refused to congratulate UH players. The Cougars (10-8, 1-2 in Conference USA) close out the regular season against Rice at the John E. Hoff Varsity Tennis Courts on Wednesday. The C-USA Championships begin Thursday in New Orleans. Golf The golf team is coming off a 13th-place finish in the U.S. Collegiate Championships in Tucson, Ariz. on Tuesday. It wasnit the best of showings for a team trying to finish the regular season strong before the Conference USA Championships begin, but at least the Cougars have had a while to put it behind them. Itis just too bad they have to go back to Arizona. They next travel to Scottsdale to participate in the Arizona State University Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
