News Event aims to give students 'upper hand' By Matt Dulin
In cooperation with New York Life, a top life insurance corporation, University Career Services is hosting a special focus dinner with select UH students to get them thinking about different career options in the industry. "Itis kind of a meet and greet event," Theresa Cyr, assistant director for career services, said. "Weire hoping to make this an annual thing, so this is sort of a pilot program." The dinner, held at 6 tonight in the Athletics/Alumni Centeris Great Hall, will gather 50 to 70 students with faculty and representatives of New York Life. Cyr said a motivational speaker will be brought in to spur students into thinking about their future. "It will hopefully bring about some awareness about the field and getting a career in general," Cyr said. "Weive had a relationship with New York Life for a while now, so this is a new development." The students invited to the dinner include some students involved with athletics, and Cyr said theyire trying to target "good candidates for jobs at New York Life." "Weire trying to get Athletics students, and (Athletics Director) Dave Maggard might be able to attend as well," Cyr said. Cyr said this is also a chance for graduates to get an upper hand in
the pitiful job market. "Hopefully they can use this opportunity to their
advantage," she said. "The New York Life reps can talk to them about what
kinds of jobs are available, but what they may not think about."
