Arts & Entertainment 'Simple' to perform a free show By Udochi Igbowke
With talent sprouting up everywhere in Houston, you might find it difficult to pick out the band most deserving of your time. Look no further than Pete Simple; the band is one of the best rising talents in the greater Houston area. Peter Lippincott sings, writes songs and plays guitar in the "emo-alternative" rock band that also features bassist Doug Parmer, keyboardist Devin Collins and drummer Susan Burnham. "I actually coined the phrase emo-alternative because we can play anything we want," the senior music major at UH said. "I want people to come and see us for who we are, not because of what other people in a certain genre have done." The band, which formed six months ago, lists influences ranging from alternative to jazz the Dave Matthews Band, Jump Little Children, Tim Reynolds, Acoustic Junction and Jupiter Coyote. "I have actually been called the love child of Dave Matthews and Edwin McCain," Lippincott said. "It was a joke, of course." In a time when many people are looking for uplifting music, Pete Simple drives to deliver that with music devoid of profanity they just play clean, pleasant music. Lippincott, who writes all the songs, formed the band according to his vision of music. "The running theme of the music is love. All of the songs were written for my girlfriend," he said. Pete Simpleis self-titled demo CD is currently sold at Nanis Games and Comics Too, located at Highway 59 and Greenbriar Drive, and Bedrock City Comic Co., located at Westheimer and Voss roads. The band will headline a show at midnight at Helios coffee shop, 411 Westheimer Rd. at the corner of Taft Street. There is no cover charge. The opening group will be Gypsy Dancing, which does exactly what its name implies.
