News Campus remembers 'beloved dead' By Tiffany Dean
A campus-wide interfaith memorial service Monday remembered UH students, staff and faculty who died in the past year. "We gather together because death has touched our lives," Rabbi Kenny Weiss said.
Dick Maddox, director of campus ministries, leads the Monday memorial service congregation in a candle lighting ceremony. The service was dedicated to 28 deceased members of the UH community. The service, which was held in the A.D. Bruce Religion Center, began with a welcome from Lubna Nabi, a Catholic campus minister. "Itis important to keep in mind those that have passed, especially in this time of war," Nabi said. A candle was lit during the ceremony for each person being honored, 28 this year. Attendees were given a chance to light a candle for their friends and family members who died as well. Among the 28, five were students, four were staff members, 12 were faculty members and seven were retired faculty and staff members. The students honored were Ryan Hartley, Catherine Kerruish, Blessan Samuel, Donald Ray Sherers and Johnny Williams. A final candle was lit for "all our beloved dead, especially those who have died in the war." The service included scripture readings from the Bible and Torah and silent reflection accompanied by music. "As long as we live, they too will live, for they will always be part
of us, as we remember them," said Dick Maddox, United Campus Ministries
director, as he led the responsive reading.
