EDITORIAL BOARD Matthew Dulin Geronimo Rodriguez Cara Sarelli Lisa Street Buckle up They say the war in Iraq is winding down ? well, aside from rebuilding the whole place and setting up a government and all. More than 100 Americans have died, as well as more than 30 Britons and hundreds of Iraqis, but the world is safe now ? or is it? The Bush administration is still cooking up its plans. Now that things with Iraq are calming down it has nothing left to do but keep its dukes up and point its fingers at other nations. True, President Bush has vetoed a case for military action against Syria for now, but itis only a matter of time. The claim is that Syria is harboring Iraqi refugees and also is manufacturing weapons of mass destruction. Itis basically the same old song but with a different country on a different day. It all comes back to Bushis "if youire not with us youire against us" philosophy. Though hundreds of Syrians did cross the border as volunteers to back Iraq up against coalition forces, "there has also been a marked backlash against the tens of thousands of Iraqis living (there), with Syrians cursing them in the street for failing to go back and fight for their own country," The New York Times reported. Still, with accusations being brought by the United States against Syria, each day should become more and more interesting. Itis only a matter of time before threats made by the president will turn into full-fledged military actions, whether heis ready to admit it to the world yet or not. Various news sources have reported that Syria has been on a list of terrorist nations for quite some time. The Bush administration has given no proof, but since when is that necessary to justify war these days? Proof doesnit matter; what matters is that the United States has the money and the military, and the United States gets what it wants. We will not stop until it has a clear stake in the Middle East. It will not stop until the oil supply is secured. The fact that Iraq is now chaotic and destroyed, that its people are scared and injured and that its infrastructure has suffered millions of dollars of damage wonit stop us. The fact that the majority of the world so angry with us we have to hide that weire American when we travel wonit stop us. Nope. All we can do is put on our seatbelts, because itis going to be a bumpy ride. Send comments to dccampus@mail.uh.edu |
