Sports Jones heads to Colorado Cougar Sports Services The womenis basketball team hasnit played in more than a month, but that doesnit mean junior guard Chandi Jonesi season is over.
Junior guard Chandi Jones was invited to participate in the 2003 USA Basketball National Team Trials in Colorado on May 22. Brian Viney/The Daily Cougar Jones was invited to participate in the 2003 USA Basketball National Team Trials in Colorado Springs, Colo., from May 22-25. Itis the third time sheis been invited to play for the womenis national team. Jones averaged 27.5 points, 8.1 rebounds and 3.4 steals per game in 2003. The defending Conference USA Player of the Year leads all women on the Universityis all-time list with 1,965 points. Including men, sheis fourth overall behind Elvin Hayes, Otis Birdsong and Michael Young. Jones will compete against other athletes for the right to join the 12-member team and represent the United States in the World Championship for Young Women and the Pan American Games during the summer. The junior played for the national team after her senior year in high school and was invited back last season. The Lady Cougars last played March 6, when they lost a heartbreaker to Southern Miss in the Conference USA Womenis Tournament. They failed to make it to the Womenis National Invitation Tournament. The Lady Cougars couldnit get on a roll last season after finishing 2002 with a 26-8 record and a trip to the WNIT championship game. They finished 2003 with a 15-13 record (6-8 in C-USA).
