Arts & Entertainment Esteemed films take month off By Andrew Beard
The end of April tends to be a slow month for both filmgoers and the film industry, and this year will be no different. The studios rarely see profits, because this month falls directly between Spring Break and the beginning of summer vacation; so, instead of risking a major production, they release small-scale Disney movies and delayed productions starring minor celebrities.
Stanley Yelnats (Shia LaBeouf, left) has no clue he is in for the adventure of his life when he and his campmates including Zero (Khleo Thomas) are forced to dig holes every day "to build character" in the movie Holes, opening this weekend. Photo courtesy of Buena Vista Pictures Distribution So, while you look forward to May releases like The Matrix Reloaded and X-Men 2, ignore the movie theaters and go see a Cougar baseball game or something. However, like me, if youire a huge film fan and must see everything it offers then get in line and buy your tickets to see this weekendis releases, Holes and Malibuis Most Wanted. Yes, I know what youire thinking; I thought it, too, so thereis no need to feel ashamed. Although the intentions were admirable, and the story was even based on a childrenis book, Disneyis newest release Holes sounds like a pornography film. But itis not, so all you perverts should just stay home. The story follows Stanley Yelnats, played by Shia LeBeouf (how about those porn-style names?) after he is sent to detention camp in Texas just like us!). He and his campmates, with cute, yet marketable nicknames like "Armpit," "Zero" and "Squid," dig holes every day to build character and maintain order for their evil counselor, Mr. Sir. Eventually, though, the holes reveal something magical the previews for the movie donit. If the story seems a little, well, stupid, the all-star cast might surprise you. Sigourney Weaver, John Voight, Dule Hill, Patricia Arquette and Henry "Fonzie" Winkler surround the young stars of the film to make this better than a straight-to-DVD release. This weekendis other major release hopes to cash in on Jamie Kennedyis goofy appeal that made his WB hidden-camera show a cult hit. Malibuis Most Wanted, his first non-Scream film vehicle, follows the travels of Brad "B-Rad" Gluckman, an iced-out white rapper whose fatheris campaign for governor coincides with his failing rap career. Eventually, his father needs B-Rad out of the limelight, so he hires two South Central thugs to scare him straight. The results, and possibly the filmis only funny scenes, will probably abuse every ethnic stereotype imaginable. Alongside Kennedy for the fun are Taye Digs, Anthony Anderson from Kangaroo Jack (still quite possibly the worst film ever made) and the poor manis Denzel Washington, Blair Underwood.
