Deadline nears for Women's Studies scholarship entries

Cougar News Staff

The UH Womenis Studies Program is ready to shovel out more than $40,000 in scholarships for prospective and returning UH students and graduates, and all itis waiting for is more applicants.

Moreover, the application deadline for several of the scholarships is 5 p.m. Friday.

There are nine scholarship opportunities, several of which offer multiple awards. Not all require applicants to be a part of the Womenis Studies Program, though many require taking a certain number of hours within the program. Most of the scholarships are open to males and females.

Rita Griffin, an instructional assistant for the program, said applicants are being sought particularly for the Professional Group Scholarships for a Woman in Transition, which are aimed, aptly, at women "in transition," Griffin said. That is, non-traditional students -- possibly older and with children -- pursuing higher education.

That particular scholarship offers two $3,000 awards. The applicant must be a U.S. citizen and Houston-area resident and should be enrolled in at least six credit hours for the Fall 2003 and Spring 2004 semesters.

The single largest scholarship -- offering $20,000 -- is open to UH graduate students, male or female, in any discipline. The scholarship is directed at students working on a dissertation focused on women or gender issues, and the money will be awarded on the merits of such a project and the studentis academic record.

The program is also offering two essay-based scholarships of $250 apiece. The essays, which can be no longer than 20 pages for undergraduates and 30 pages for graduate students, must address womenis studies topics and be originally written for a UH class.

A three-person committee will judge the essays and announce the winners in May. The deadline for entries is May 9.

Applications and more information about these and the other scholarships being offered by the Womenis Studies Program can be found in the programis office in Room 607, Agnes Arnold Hall. The office can be reached by telephone at 713-743-3214.

Full descriptions of the scholarships can also be found at the Womenis Studies Web site, www.friendsofwomen.org
