Sports UH closes in on leaders Cougar Sports Services There may be something to the idea of playing against the best to toughen up for conference play. Itis worked for the Cougars so far. The UH golf team ended the first day of competition in the Conference USA Championships in fourth place with a 5-over-par 289 team score. Charlotte leads with a 1-over-par 285 while Texas Christian and Alabama-Birmingham are tied for second at 4-over-par 288. Fourteen teams are competing in the 54-hole, three-round tournament through Wednesday in Tampa, Fla The Cougars were followed by South Florida (6-over-par 290), Southern Miss (8-over-par 292), Memphis (11-over-par 295), East Carolina and Tulane (tied at 13-over-par 297) and Louisville and Marquette (tied at 14-over-par 298). The Cougars were led by senior Brett Callas, who shot a 1-under-par 70 to tie for fifth place in individual scoring. Senior John Wine was tied for 11th place at 1-over-par 72 while Denton Walker tied for 18th place at 2-over-par 73. Sophomore Daniel Angenscheidt was tied for 29th place at 3-over-par 74 and freshman Zach Mowbray tied for 54th place with a first-round 78. Charlotteis Russell Killough and Alabama-Birminghamis Clark Brown were tied for first on the leaderboard with a 3-under-par 68. Tee time at the par-71 course is set for 7 a.m. today.
