News Student research being displayed for contest Cougar News Services Think of it as a high school science fair, only cooler. Undergraduate and graduate studentsi research efforts will take center stage at a campus exhibition today as Sigma Xi hosts its annual Research Day. About 45 posters will display research from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the first floor commons of Cullen College of Engineering 1. Faculty members of Sigma Xi, the scientific research society, a non-profit science and engineering society, will also contend for the societyis Sigma Xi Faculty Research Award. Five graduate students will also receive Research Achievement Awards, which recognizes student scientistsi work, noting originality, productivity and potential. Award winners get to take home $300 with the honor. A graduate student researcher is also eligible to nab one of five Meritorious Graduate Student Poster Awards. Graduate poster award winners receive a $200 cash prize. Meritorious Undergraduate Student Poster Awards will also be given for presentations of research projects by undergraduates. Winners get a $100 cash prize. Awards and honors will be announced at the closing of the event, at 1 p.m. Sigma Xi, which has chapters in more than 500 colleges, universities, government labs and industry research centers nationwide, boasts more than 150 active members at its UH chapter.
