Arts & Entertainment 'Manon' is beautiful, fulfilling production By Cheryl Stell
Soprano Elizabeth Futral makes her role debut as the title character in the Houston Grand Operais production of Jules Massenet's Manon. Manon is a young and vivacious girl who finds herself in a complicated and passionate love affair. Futral makes this difficult role look like a cakewalk. Her vocal strength and range will blow your mind, and her acting shines in this deep and touching story. In the production Manon finds herself lost in a world that is kind to her because of her physical beauty. Her materialistic values in the end harm her soul. Opposite the Futral is tenor Scott Piper. He first caught HGOis attention at Concert of Arias, in1999. He is now making his house and role debut as Des Grieux, the gentleman in waiting. HGO did a fine job covering for Marcello Giordani, who was originally cast for the role, but withdrew due to illness. Piper brings heart and warmth to the production that truly makes the audience feel his pain. Stage director Lee Blakeley and Conductor Emmanuel Joelis timing was absolutely perfect. The direction and music go hand in hand and add real impact to the productionis emotional draw and appeal. Manon is a beautiful and fulfilling production, with every moment interesting and moving. The unbelievable singing and choreography and lavish costumes and drama stimulated everyone in the audience in a very voyeuristic fashion. To newcomers the HGO graciously provides English captions, and the combination of reading, listening and watching the story makes it all the more wonderful to experience. This show is a must for those who have been involved in a secure and loving relationship, but werenit completely sure if a partner was "the one." Manon is playing select dates through May 11.
