Opinion

Big thanks from Mugwump

Cara Sarelli
Editor in Chief

Nobody expects a Spanish Inquisition. Thatis what Monty Python said ? or at least, thatis what the character James in Sliding Doors said that Monty Python said.

That about sums up how this semester has gone for me at The Daily Cougar.

Being the mugwump at the paper has been challenging. The hours have at times made me feel more like a career woman than a student, but Iive learned more than I could possibly explain in one sitting.

Of course, putting out a paper for tens of thousands of readers every day takes the efforts of many people, but before I go into my thank-yous, I would like to personally congratulate the UH class of 2003. Go Coogs!

Now, if you are reading this and like me will still be around next year, you may want to consider joining the Cougar family. Writers, photographers, copy editors and section editors are needed for the Summer and Fall 2003 semesters. Donit worry; you donit have to be a communication major. The Cougar accepts applications from all major fields of study. So come by Room 151 of the Communication Building and fill one out.

Now, about those thanks. Iid like first to thank my editorial staff. Matt Dulin, the paper wouldnit have been the same without you this semester. Youire the coolest, most hardworking News editor ever, and a freshman at that. You put Doogie Howser to shame.

To editors Bridget Brown and Lisa Street: Thank you for making the Entertainment and Opinion sections possible. You both dove into your work and made things happen; for that I am grateful.

To Photo editors Nathan Lindstrom and Lorrie Novosad: You made a great team. Iim glad I could depend on you to get things done.

And to Copy Chief Shaun Salnave: Thank you for holding down the fort just in time for me to keep my sanity. Also, congratulations on your graduation.

To Keenan Singleton, former editor in chief: Thank you for making me to believe early on that I could do this.

Also, to Nikie Johnson, Singletonis predecessor: Thank you for everything, and congratulations on your graduation as well.

And Zippy Godse, all Abba aside, I owe you my first-born child. Your help and dedication is unparalleled.

To Managing editor Geronimo Rodriguez: You sacrificed so much time and energy for the Cougar this semester. Thank you. Iid wish you luck for next semester, when you will take the reins as editor in chief, but you donit need it. Youire going to do awesome.

Iid also like to thank the Student Publications Committee for allowing me this opportunity; Dick Cigler, director of SPC, for all his advice, encouragement and patience; and everyone on the Cougar staff ? a million thanks.

On a couple personal notes, Iid like to thank my family, for reading the Cougar every day, and Jeff Campbell, for all his love and support.

Well, thatis it. This is Editor Smurf, signing off.

Sarelli, a sophomore theater major, can be reached at dcougar@mail.uh.edu.
