'Terry Scholars' branches out to UH

Cougar News Services

The Houston-based Terry Foundation, which as served the University of Texas and Texas A&M University, is expanding its prestigious "Terry Scholars" scholarship program to award 16 UH freshmen in Fall 2004.

The program will award 16 freshmen annually with scholarships that will cover tuition, housing, books and other expenses. While designed for a studentis first year of college, the scholarship is renewable and could be used to cover the costs of a studentis entire college education.

"This committment from the Terry Foundation to the University of Houston to support the continued growth of academic excellence on our campus is further proof that we are moving this institution in the right direction," UH President and System Chancellor Arthur K. Smith said in a press release.

"Terry Scholars at UH will benefit from the schoolis outstanding academic programs and growing national reputation for excellence," the foundationis president, Edward T. Cotham, Jr., said.

Selection for the scholarships relies on a studentis academic excellence, leadership and financial need -- but there is no direct application process from students. A potential scholar must be nominated from a universityis designated offices. The Honors College will oversee the nomination process at UH.

"The Terry Foundation Scholarship program is one of the most distinguished and largest programs of its kind in the country," said Ted Estess, dean of the Honors College, in a press release. "...the opportunity to be named a Terry Scholar certainly will make UH an even more attractive place for many promising students."

UH candidates do not have to be in the Honors College to be eligible for nomination.

The Terry Scholarship Program, established with the formation of the Terry Foundation in 1986, has helped more than 1,000 Texas college students. Some 550 Terry scholars were enrolled at UT and Texas A&M last year.

The foundation, funded by a $100 million endowment designed to last indefinitely, gives out an increasing number of awards each year.
