UH optometrist named Fellow of Royal Society

John G. Robson, a UH senior research professor of optometry, has been elected along with 42 other elitists from the fields of science, engineering and technology to join a scientific academy in England.

Robson was named a Fellow of the Royal Society on May 15 for his contribution to fundamental research and exceptional progress in vision science. His permanent residence is in Cambridge, England, where he received both of his masters and doctorate degrees. He is a life fellow of Gonville and Caius College at the University of Cambridge.

The Royal Society, founded in 1660, is the world's oldest scientific academy. Researchers elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Society are recognized with the noblest regard in science.

His precise measurements and analysis of visual processing conducted at Cambridge from 1946 to 1996 have resulted in many highly cited published works as well as prestigious recognition by the Friedenwald Award of the Association for Research in Vision Ophthalmology and the Tillyer Award of the Optical Society of America.

Since 1990, Robson has been a consultant on a UH project funded by the National Eye Institute and led by Laura Frishman, who focuses on the studies of visual processing in the retina of the eye. His work with the University has resulted in various published research articles and technical reports.
