Summer's curse ends
with 'Pirates'
This summer has been plagued by one meaningless sequel
after another. Fortunately, a flick has sailed along just in time to save
the masses from drowning. Although based on a corny amusement ride in Disneyland,
director Gore Verbinski reinvigorates a dead genre with The Pirates of
the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. The movie is both engaging
and charming even though it runs a little on the lengthy side --135 minutes
to be exact.
Well sells out label, not sound
One thing can't be argued about Poison the Well's newest
offering, You Come Before You. It doesn't sound like anything put out by
a major label.
Warped lacks on diversity
The Vans Warped Tour will be at the Reliant Center on
Sunday. If you attend, expect the sets to be cut short and maybe a stage
shut down because of the lousy weather conditions we're dealing with (the
same thing happened last year). While the tour boasts many bands each year,
most of them are repeat players and sound horrible live. Kevin Lyman's
summer tour lacks diversity among its artists, most of whom are flavor-of-the-week
pop-punk acts. Here is a run down on what to check out and what to avoid.
