Campus thespians wrap up semester with FATT event

Curtain Call

Geronimo Rodriguez

You've laughed through the campus hit, Lend Me A Tenor, re-examined life after the in-depth Our Town and threw away the pills and scratched through a few journal entries after Childe Byron.

What's next for campus students yearning for their free fix of drama from the UH theater department?

FATT.

The "Friday Afternoon Theater Thing" is the theater department's relatively unrehearsed show where theater students bang out roles, ranging from off-the-wall characters to even a touch of William Shakespeare.

Performers for today's FATT will deliver their acts while barefoot. It will be held at 4 p.m. in the Jose Quintero Lab Theatre.

Mimi Martinez, junior theater student and Alpha Psi Omega president, said FATT allows the campus' drama core to put on a no-holds-barred acting fare.

Most if not all the dialogue is written or twisted by students, so expect a lot of ad-libbing, Martinez said.

"Basically, it's an informal way for drama students to showcase their talent in front of students and staff," Martinez said.

While the department offers a few plays with a relatively long cast list to fill, some of the thespians aspiring to be the next Al Pacino or Meryl Streep don't have a chance to even be the next best stage hand.

With FATT, which Martinez said the APO tries to hold as often as possible, students get to show off what they've learned from both going to class and watching The Godfather a few hundred times.

Perhaps the best aspect of the Friday event is that students get to show what they have without worrying about fumbling in front of a crowd of season-ticket holders.

Conversely, the campus acting gang cheers on their fellow cast mates. There might be some ribbing, but it's all in the name of FATT.

Other events helping wind down the semester areas follows: A Musical Workshop/ Collaboration at 2 p.m. on Dec. 6 and 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 8 in the Jose Quintero Lab, Dance Outside the Box, at 2 p.m. on Dec. 8 on the Wortham Stage.
