Hidden hot spot adds high-class flair to club scene

No Cover

Shiley Carter

Nestled behind the various back streets and camouflaged neighborhoods around the River Oaks and Galleria area, one can find a uniquely styled, multi-roomed club that caters to an attractive Houston crowd and fulfills various desires for music and taste.

Club Uropa, located at 3302 Mercer St. (just off of Alabama), finds itself unsuspectingly hidden in an area where few could embark on a journey and end up here, but many find their way back after experiencing it only once. The fairly pricey club offers dance, drinks and entertainment every Thursday through Saturday from 9 p.m. until 2 a.m.

Walking along the club's side gate entrance, you get a view of the fun and dancing inside. But the real entrance to the maze-like quarters comes as a surprise, with a slew of socializers and club-goers just around the corner. Upon entering, the venue is a bit cramped, but undeniably cozy.

The packed dance floor is the first experience, leading into the main bar room where there are places to sit and plenty of good-looking people to mingle with. During the trek through the multi-roomed funhouse, a thought comes to mind about this club once being a house.

As club-goers make their way through the place, other rooms pop up out of nowhere filled with groups of twentysomethings.

A deejay in the main room spins the latest in-house and dance, and fulfills just about any request. The bartenders are friendly and ready to make you whatever your heart (or stomach) desires, but it does come with a hefty price. You can't expect to go out in this area and enjoy this kind of place without a price tag being attached.

But if you are looking to hang out with some of Houston's elite, a few Hawaiian Tropic models and many other recognizable faces, the Uropa crowd is the place to mingle.

If you have trouble finding the hidden hotspot or want more information about Club Uropa, call 713-627-1132.

Until next semester, stand in line, pay the cover charge at your own risk. So long as the music is to your liking and the drinks are cheap, tell a friend — who knows, you just might find the next hotspot yourself.
