Opinion

Enter the newest mugwump

Cara Sarelli
Editor in Chief

What's up and happy New Year everyone. Welcome back to UH. I'm sure the squirrels are just as excited (out with the acorns; make room for the chips and candy) as I am.

To any new students at the University, I hope The Daily Cougar helps you to get acquainted with your latest home away from home. Make sure to check out the new and improved UC Satellite when you get a break between classes.

I also want to welcome the Cougar's Spring 2003 staff, which includes a handful of veterans along with a more than capable, talented bunch of rookies. I'm looking forward to a great semester working with you.

This semester at the Cougar brings many goals, such as building a strong and diverse staff, as well as increasing communication between the paper and its readers.

I urge anyone who may be interested in joining us to apply. The Cougar considers applicants from all classifications and major fields of study. Opportunities for staff writers, Opinion columnists, photographers and copy editors abound.

All sections of the paper can use some new blood, but especially Opinion and Sports.

If playing god with other people's words sounds like a good time to you, you may want to take a crack at editing copy. As the former copy chief of the Cougar, I can testify that a job as a copy editor at this fine publication is the greatest job in the world -- that is, next to being the mugwump. And as a copy editor you would certainly be able to engage in mugwumpery.

In addition to staff members, the Cougar also needs help from (say it with me) readers like you. Let us know how we're doing, or respond to anything printed in the paper by submitting a much-appreciated letter to the editor. Please limit your writing to no more than 400 words. That way if all 35,000 of you decide to write one at the same time, we should have room to print lots of them. Remember also to attach your classification and major, as well as contact information -- which we will not publish or release, but need in order to check the validity of the letter.

Also, if you have information about a campus event that needs coverage in the paper, by all means tell us about it so we can inform the rest of the UH community. Campus Spotlight forms are in the Cougar office and on the Web site.

Thanks for reading, and enjoy your semester.
