News Faculty Senate welcomes new president today Cougar News Services Convening for the first time this year, the Faculty Senate will welcome its newly elected president, Anne Jacobson, today in the Kiva Room of Farish Hall. The "passing of the gavel," as the transition ceremony is called, will follow outgoing president Joseph Eichbergis farewell address. Jacobson will then deliver her inaugural address. In the last meeting of the Senate in December, Jacobson said she was honored to have worked with Eichberg and said he was an "awesome model to try to follow." UH President Arthur K. Smith and Provost Edward Sheridan will report to the Senate; however, memos that The Daily Cougar received said the Senate was not sure if the president and the provost will be able to attend because of state-level budget meetings scheduled concurrently with the noon senate meeting. Funding is on the minds of many senators, including one who suggested in an e-mail memo that a once-standing organization, the University Planning and Policy Committee, be reinstated to help address funding questions. Under Eichbergis term as president, the Faculty Senate dealt with a climate survey that voiced displeasure with the administration. In its last meeting, the 2002 Senate accepted a resolution to confirm the results of the survey and downplay rumors of falsification. The next administration faces the task of working with Smithis successor, who will come into office after he retires in September. Robert B. Wilson, Jr., the UH chief of police is also set to make his
first report of the year to the Senate.
