Arts & Entertainment UH play 'Fuddy Meers' to open By Chris Brunt
"You think you have a memory, but it has you." This quote from author John Irvingis "A Prayer for Owen Meany" poignantly portrays the themes of UH School of Theatreis most recent production of Fuddy Meers. The fresh new play by David Lindsay-Abaire opens at UHis Wortham Theatre this evening for what will no doubt be a memorable weekend run. As part of the Student Production Play Series, this feature is brimming with youthful verve. The actors, designers, crew and director Joshua Gray are all UH theater majors. Lindsay-Abaire, playwright whose credits include Wonder of the World, starring Sarah Jessica Parker, has written a play that critics from The Daily Cougar to The New York Times have been raving about. The play is centered on an amnesiac housewife and the hysterical cast of lunatics and criminals who seek her affection. Exploring such loaded concepts as memory and identity, our fellow classmates have shouldered a colossal undertaking. Combining raucous comedy with edgy crime drama, these students are working at the cusp of modern theater. Theyive earned our enthusiastic support, and will probably in turn merit our overwhelming awe and fear. Irving also said, "Your memory is a monster; you forget -- it doesnit. It simply files things away. It keeps things from you -- and summons them to your recall." Provocative, no? A supremely talented ensemble of your peers brings you this production which, thankfully, contains violence, adult language and mature situations. Viewer discretion is advised. Honestly … what more could you ask for? Performances are 7:30 p.m. Thursday; 2 and 8 p.m. Friday; 8 and 11 p.m. Saturday (the last, a special late show for the night owls). All shows are in the Jose Quintero Lab Theatre, off Entrance 16 in the Wortham Theatre. Admission is free. Fuddy Meers Directed by: Joshua Gray The verdict: This comedy about kidnapping, sanity and horrible disfigurement
is good and itis free.
