Students react to address

By Phoebe Hawkins
The Daily Cougar

The UH students who cared enough to watch President Bushis State of the Union address Tuesday have mixed feelings about the War on Terror; some are in agreement with and stand behind Bush, while others canit help feeling wary.

In his address, Bush touched several key points including the economy and Medicare funding. The possibility of war was the main focus of the address and also UH studentsi main worry.

With war looming, students are concerned about the present economy. The condition of the job market is on many minds, as millions of new graduates are expected to enter the fray come the end of this semester. Many feel this should be the Bush administrationis main focus, and not Iraq. Many students feel Bush hasnit presented substantial evidence of nuclear, biological and chemical arms and simply feel like the United States is searching for a needle in a haystack.

Other points addressed in Bushis speech seemed "to be addressing a hidden agenda and not the current concerns of the nation," said junior communication major Amber Church. "Instead of spending our money on something as frivolous as a war, we should be using it on more beneficial issues, such as the AIDS crisis and our economy."

Bush did outline plans to help remedy the AIDS crisis both at home and abroad, such as in Africa, where the plague-like disease has reached epidemic proportions. Church said she thinks the United States should focus its energies on that problem.

Because of the lack of proof, freshman university studies student Dara Yoch isnit concerned about the war because "everything does not add up."

Bradley Jachay, a freshman university studies student, said he believes the State of the Union address itself is just a distortion of the facts. "Until I see action, I wonit believe anything will be done," he said.

Loren Fisher, a sophomore hotel and restaurant management major, believes Bush knows whatis best and that each proposal he was made will soon be implemented.

" He will do whatis best for our country," Fisher said.
