Tennis heads to the Big D to face TCU, SMU

Tennis: Flood could move into singles action later in the season

If Miranda Foley was at all nervous about playing in the No.1 spot for UH last week, folks should expect to see her name on the list of Oscar nominees.

The freshman, a native of England, was named Conference USAis Co-Player of the Week after breezing past Texas-Pan Americanis Elisabet Mateos 6-1, 6-3 and leading the Cougars to a 7-0 sweep over the Lady Broncs on Saturday at the John Hoff/Varsity tennis courts.

"(Foley) has the potential to be this teamis leader," head coach Jennifer Hyde said. "She is young, but can really step up."

The Cougars (1-0) will look to step up this weekend when they head to Dallas/Fort Worth to play their conference opener against Texas Christian on Saturday and will face Southern Methodist on Sunday.

"I think we have the potential to win conference this year," Hyde said. "We have more depth with this team than any other season, so it looks good."

Senior Ani Longoni, who routed UTPAis Kathryn Waslen 6-0, 6-0, played in the No. 2 spot for the Cougars and said she hopes to give the team a measure of toughness in her last season.

"I have been practicing hard to get both physically and mentally tough," she said. "I have to stay focused in order to see good results."

Storming the doubles scene for UH is sophomore Sarah Flood, who paired with Karin Urbin in an 8-1 victory over UT-Pan Am. Flood returned to the Cougarsi lineup last October after she was sidelined following a near-fatal automobile accident.

While Flood only competes in doubles at the moment, Hyde said she could move into singles play later in the season.

The Texas Christian Horned Frogs (1-0, 1-0 in C-USA) opened their spring season with a 7-0 sweep over conference foe Saint Louis last weekend.

Leading the Frogs was sophomore Karla Mancinas, who beat the Billikensi Amy OiHandley 6-2, 6-4.

Southern Methodist (4-0, 1-0 in Western Athletic Conference) has also come out swinging this season, winning its conference opener against Texas-El Paso,

7-0.
