Cougar Sports Staff

The UH softball team begins the 2003 season on the road with a trip to San Marcos for the Southwest Texas State Softball Classic today.

The Cougars plays SWT at 5 p.m. and Arkansas at 7 p.m. They then play Oregon at 5 p.m. Saturday and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 7 p.m. Saturday. Their stay in San Marcos concludes with a game against Texas Tech at noon Sunday.

Other schools competing in the classic are: SWT, Texas Tech, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Arkansas and Oregon.

The team will return six starters from the squad that finished 35-25 last year, including junior pitchers Jamie Falco and Jenny Johnson and sophomore Kristen Glowacz.

Falco and Johnson recorded 15 wins each in 2002, while starting shortstop Glowacz walked away with the Conference USA Freshman of the Year award after batting .342 in her first season at UH. Thirteen veterans will return to the squad this year, including junior catcher Arelis Ferreris.

The Cougars start their home schedule Feb. 14 in the Cougar Invitational. The Cougar Softball Stadium will also be home to the 2003 C-USA Softball Tournament on May 8.
