Papa Roach headlines show at Numbers tonight

By Jamie Wells
The Daily Cougar

For their third headlining tour in almost as many years, Jerry Horton, Dave Buckner, Tobin Esperance and Jacoby Shaddix of Papa Roach set out on a three-month tour Jan. 13 beginning in Vancouver, a DreamWorks spokesperson said.

Before the New Year, Papa Roach was on hiatus for the holiday season. They started their headlining tour in mid-January with its sophomore album, this yearis Lovehatetragedy.

In December, Papa Roach recorded a new track tentatively titled "Doni Look Back," which appears on the soundtrack for the movie Biker Boyz. Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo (The Neptunes) produced the song.

"Lovehatetragedy," which features the songs "She Loves Me Not" and "Time and Time Again," surfaced last June. "Time and Time Again" is currently used in the Pepsi Blue commercials, which also feature the band. The album follows the groupis triple-platinum 2000 debut, Infest, which led to the breakthrough hit "Last Resort."

According to MTVis Web site, in an effort to evolve musically, and perhaps sensing that rap-rock's flame was flickering, Papa Roach made a point of emphasizing the rock on Lovehatetragedy.

True to their word, the album, released last June, was virtually devoid of hip-hop elements, with the exception for a bridge in the first single, "She Loves Me Not." The song was a hit in rock radio, but the subsequent single "Time and Time Again" has failed to match Infestis popularity.

The bandis new album was able to sell a solid 135,000 copies in its first week, but it stands at 571,000 in total sales and has vanished from the Billboard albums chart even seven months later. However, a gold album isnit that bad either.

Lovehatetragedy is a terrific album that features a song dedicated to the victims and families of 9/11.

Papa Roach knows how to get a crowd roared up and ready to rock. Go and check out Papa Roach tonight at Numbers. The price is $17, and the show starts at 8 p.m. with opening bands Blindside and Un Loco.

For more information call the Numberis box office at 713-526-6551.

Numbers, 300 Westheimer Rd.

The verdict: The venue is small, so be prepared to be packed in for an awesome, up close and personal show.
