News Smith seeks candidates for honorary degrees Cougar News Services President Arthur K. Smith is asking faculty, staff, students and alumni to submit nominations for recipients of the Universityis Honorary Degrees to the Honorary Degree Committee. Ideally, a person receiving an honorary degree from UH would have had extensive experience and accomplishments in supporting the University community. The President is aiming to generate a diverse pool of potential honorees, from which two to four will be chosen in April for approval by the Board of Regents to receive the distinction. The deadline for nominations is Feb. 28. From the recipients, Smith may also choose one to serve as the speaker at the spring commencement ceremony. Among the criteria for candidates, Smith outlined that he or she cannot be a staff or faculty member, but can be an emeritus professor who has worked with the University for many years. Members of elected offices cannot be nominated unless they are in the last year of their term and not seeking reelection. Members of the Board of Regents and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board are included under this rule. Nominations should be confidential. The committee can be reached via e-mail at ivtrevino@uh.edu. Send comments to dcnews@mail.uh.edu |
