News KUHF airs black history programming By Sheree Stubblefield
In an effort to acknowledge past achievements of civil rights activists, the UH-based radio station, KUHF 88.7FM, began broadcasting a series of programs in observance of Black History Month. The initial documentary premiered Sunday, Feb. 2, and was entitled "As American as Apple Pie: How Segregation and Terror Lost." This program focused on activistsi efforts to overturn the longstanding "separate but equal" policy that kept schools and other American public institutions segregated. Cultural programs are not foreign to KUHF, but there is a special emphasis this month because "African-Americans (have) made a significant impact on America," said Director of Programming Robert Stevenson. This month is a little different than the past years of Black History Month broadcasts because there is an increased amount of airtime, he said. On Feb. 19 at 6 p.m., there will be a special program featuring black musicians. These broadcasts and some others are supplied by National Public Radio and Public Radio International, and if KUHF has room for the program, then it will be aired. The next programs in the series of documentaries will be aired every Sunday in February at 5 p.m. The next show will be titled "America Radio Works: Oh Freedom Over Me" and will center on what has been commonly known as "Freedom Summer." "Their voices will be heard. Itis what we do," Stevenson said.
