Letters to the Editor

Smoke, guns

To the editor:

I cannot believe the consolidated opinion of the editorial board printed Thursday ("No smoke, no gun," Opinion). You people are so far from reality that your judgement is extremely biased.

I would gladly share world economics with your minions. I was in "Desert Storm" with the 2nd Armored Cavalry, and I'm a proud veteran of that campaign. I even met Secretary of State Colin Powell personally on the field of war where men (not boys) bond in the tragedy of conflict.

The proud reason for being a soldier is that even the enemy is respected as a human being. Saddam Hussein does not even qualify as a sane human being. He has used chemical and biological weapons on his own country and ours alike, with little compassion.

Two of my fellow soldiers on the return to Germany after the war died by mysterious causes, and several more wives had deformed children as the result of the delinquent manifestation called Hussein.

You people need to look more into the facts, not just run your mouths about something you're not even qualified to edit. Most people reply with the argument that this is a free country and people can speak freely. Yes it is, but, as former-President John F. Kennedy used to say, "Ask not ‘What has this country done for me?i but ‘What have you done for this country?i" I would bet 20 years of my life that not one of you have done anything for this country but community service, which any mature individual most assuredly has done.

I'd bet that half of you have never experienced a Third World country even. You might be living in that nice, white house on the hill, but your philosophy on life glows where the sun does not shine.

Michael Mowry,
senior, pre-business

To the editor:

Let me get this straight -- you think that the Iraqi representative's presentation was rational? You think his accusation that the U.S. government was using doctored photos and faked phone conversations was rational? You think his accusation that Powell was lying to the U.N. Security Council was rational?

Who are you people? Have you been living on Mars for the last ten years? You think any Iraqi official is trustworthy? Even Hans Blix has stated on numerous occasions that the Iraqi government has done everything it could to hamper the inspection process.

Iraq has offered no counter-claim to refute any of Powellis accusations that Iraq is concealing weapons, or Blix's that they are not cooperating with the inspectors. That your editorial staff can continue to side with the Iraqi government is not only absurd -- it is beyond all comprehension and borderline treasonous.

Not just to frighten

To the editor:

I read with interest the Opinion column written by Samira Zaidi, "Bush uses terrorism to frighten" (Thursday), and I agree with her. If I could borrow her phrase, I am sure her 3-year-old neighbor recognized that the Bush administration uses terrorism to draw the party line.

But surely Zaidi recognizes that the first cries of "Not terrorism" came not from our leaders on high, but local authorities trying to stem the tide of supposedly well-intentioned vigilantes. Prospects of grassroots Americans taking to the streets to avenge our nation's loss was enough for NASA and other local authorities to proclaim "Not terrorism" loud and clear. Good for them.

That the Bush administration also used the information to backhandedly incite the masses is sad.
