Arts & Entertainment MFA presents work of black artists By Uruj Perwaiz
Works in all media by black artists will be shown at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston during the Seventh Annual Citywide African-American Artist Exhibition. Each year the works are displayed at multiple sites throughout Houston, but this will be the first year MFAH will be one of the sites for the show. The African American Art Advisory Association (Five-A) is sponsoring the show. Founded in 1993, Five-A specializes in enhancing collections of black art, and in educating the community about the various works created by blacks. Originally, the citywide exhibition was founded in order to give emerging black artists the chance to display their works to a much larger audience. The artists range from college art professors to the self-taught. During last yearis event, the work of nine artists was shown at four spots; this year there will be 250 works by 38 artists showing at the MFAH, as well as at five other sites in Houston. Currently, MFAH has more than 400 works by black artists in its permanent collection, which makes it one of the largest collections owned by a mainstream museum in the country. The exhibition will run through Sunday. For more information, visit www.mfah.org.
