News SGA campaigns under way Candidates will be certified Wednesday, commissioner says by Geronimo Rodriguez
Seventy of 80 candidates for Student Government Association office attended a mandatory candidate forum presented by the SGA's Election Commission on Thursday in the University Center's Bluebonnet Room. The SGA Election Code stipulates that candidates can be excused before, or up to 24 hours after, the forum. Chief Election Commissioner Jason Short said he received six excuses before the forum and will wait until 5:30 p.m. today to receive the other four. Short, with Assistant Election Commissioner Jackie Thomas, went over information vital to candidates, including the Election Code and University policy with regard to posting materials and usage of facilities. In addition to checking whether candidates are currently enrolled at UH, Short said the commission will make certain all candidates are qualified to run for their respective seats. The ballot will be finalized by Wednesday, he said. As for online voting, Learning and Support Services will do test runs on the online voting process Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, the commission said. Although the trial voting will be limited to computers on campus, students will be able to vote from any computer during the general election March 10 and 11. The presidential candidates will participate
in a public debate at 5 p.m. March 8 in the University Center's Houston
Room. UH Law professor Darren Bush will moderate the hour-long debate,
which is sponsored by The Daily Cougar and co-sponsored by the Hispanic
Media Association and the Student Video Network.
