Coogs stay hot against UTSA Cougar Sports Staff The Cougar softball team is off to the best start in school history at 23-8 after sweeping a doubleheader against Texas-San Antonio on Wednesday, winning its fifth consecutive game in the process. Houston junior designated hitter Jenilee Skender stepped into the role of savior that belonged to teammate Kristen Glowacz the night before, hitting a two-run homerun in the sixth inning of Game 1 to put the Cougars ahead 4-3. Senior catcher Arelis Ferreris scored an insurance run on a Jeanie Davis single to make the final score 5-3.
Sophomore shortstop Jaci Gonzalez continues to anchor the Cougar infield, allowing UH pitching to cede only four runs over the two games Wednesday. Manuel Rearte/The Daily Cougar The Roadrunners took the lead in the fourth inning on a bases-loaded, two-run double by Tammy Nelson. The damage could have been worse, but as has been the case all season, senior Jenny Jones came in to put out the flames, retiring the final two batters of the inning. Jones earned the win, pushing her record to 9-4 on the season. The Cougars were the aggressors in the second contest, scoring the first two runs of the game in the fourth inning. Ferreris singled in Glowacz to put Houston ahead 1-0, then scored the second run on a double steal with teammate Brandi Clark. Ferreris also added her team-leading sixth homerun of the season in the sixth inning, and, despite a late run by UTSA, the Cougars won 3-1. Freshman pitcher Carla Kennimer picked up her third win of the season, allowing only one run over 5.2 innings with one strikeout. Kyla Holas' team now has the weekend off before traveling to Waco on Monday to take on the Baylor Bears. Send comments to dcsports@mail.uh.edu |
