Two more candidates have been named for UH provost: Sharon Stephens Brehm, former chancellor of Indiana University Bloomington, and Elizabeth Langland, dean of the Division of Humanities, Arts and Cultural Studies at the University of California, Davis.

Brehm, a senior adviser to IU President Adam Herbert, retired as chancellor of IU Bloomington on Jan. 1 after two and a half years in office. She also served as vice president of academic affairs for the eight-campus IU system, which enrolls more than 99,000 students.

Brehm came to IU from Ohio University, where she was provost. During her time at Ohio, she increased undergraduate scholarships by 266 percent and worked on hiring underrepresented faculty.

She earned her master's degree in social relations from Harvard University and her doctorate in clinical psychology from Duke University.

Langland has been dean of her division at UC Davis since 1999. She began her academic career in 1975 at Vanderbilt University, where she helped found the women's studies program. During 14 years at the University of Florida, Langland received three teacher of the year awards and was recognized for her scholarly achievement.

Langland is the author of Telling Tales: Gender and Narrative Form in Victorian Literature and Culture, a book that examines gender in Victorian narratives. She graduated from Barnard College in New York City and received her master's and doctoral degrees in English literature from the University of Chicago.

The search for someone to fill the dual position of the University's provost and the UH System's vice chancellor for academic affairs has been under way since Edward P. Sheridan stepped down in September. The 17-member System-wide search committee tapped six candidates initially, but two dropped out of the search.

The remaining candidates are Richard Edwards of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; Cristina González of UC Davis; Charles Louis of Georgia State University; and Luanna Meyer of Massey University in New Zealand.

Open forums where the campus community may meet Brehm and Langland will be held at the University Hilton this week. The forum for Langland is set for 4 p.m. Tuesday in the Hilton's Shamrock Room, and Brehm's will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the same room.

Everyone is welcome to attend the hour-long forums, which will begin with statements from the candidates and finish with Q-and-A sessions.
