Revenge on the mind for Coogs By Tom Carpenter
The UH baseball team gets a chance to avenge its first loss of the season today when the Cougars face Texas Tech at First American Bank Ballpark in Midland at 7 p.m. Texas Tech beat the Cougars 12-7 in 11 innings Feb. 14 at the Minute Maid Park College Classic. The Cougars (8-14) will start a freshman hurler for the third consecutive game when Brad Depoy takes the mound against the Red Raiders (15-7). The 6-1, 200-pound righthander from the Woodlands will make his first start of the season after compiling a 5.79 ERA in a little over four innings as a reliever. The Red Raiders will counter with right-hander John Milton, 2-0 with a 4.50 ERA. Milton played two seasons at Paris Junior College where he went 8-3 his final year with a 2.04 ERA . Texas Tech took two out of three games from Clemson in Lubbock last weekend thanks to the long ball. Junior outfielder Madison Edwards pings the aluminum at a .435 clip while Michael Mask and Josh Brady lead the team in homers with seven apiece. The Cougars' top two hitters, senior third baseman Nick Bott and junior shortstop Stuart Musslewhite, will be sidelined because of hand injuries. Senior DH Brett Cooley, averaging .291 with five home runs and 20 RBIs will lead the Cougar attack. Junior catcher Rob Johnson, who enjoys a six-game hitting streak, ranks fourth among Cougar hitters with a .288 batting average. Johnson has raised his average .092 points during the streak. The Cougars open Conference USA play Friday when they take on Texas Christian at Cougar Field in a three-game series, and they will follow with the third game of the five-game Silver Glove Series against cross-town rival Rice on Mar. 30.
