Fight tuition hikes, Miller tells students by Geronimo Rodriguez
Student Government Association President Dawona Miller sealed her final SGA Senate meeting with a plea for the next administration to fight future tuition and fee increases and better relay to students where their money is going. "I think we can better educate students on the fee increases by opening the doors to the (Academic Fee Committee) and getting more student representation on that committee," Miller said after the 40th administration's final meeting on Wednesday. "I think this administration did good." Miller, who served two terms as SGA president, will be succeeded by President-elect Jon Quintanilla on April 1. Quintanilla is the only SGA officer who sits on the Academic Fee Committee. He said committee officials allowed more than one SGA member to participate in the past, but changed that policy when attendance became a problem. However, Quintanilla said he will press officials to open another seat for an SGA member during his tenure. In other business, the Senate passed a bill proposing five days of "dead week" study time before final exams every spring and fall. The bill, written by Hotel and Restaurant Management Sen. Abby Fogarty, relied on students' opinions: 2,959 students voted on the dead week issue during the SGA general election March 10 and 11, and 690 of them voted for a five-class-day study period. College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences Sen. Michael Graves submitted a resolution to keep the residential C Stores open during the holidays. In the resolution, Graves said "students should not have to hike across campus to shop at a (convenience) store during these holiday periods." The Senate will next meet at 7:30 p.m.
April 7.
