Opinion
Letters to the Editor A matter of pride To the editor: I agree with Timmy Le's March 24 column ("UH wears lack of spirit on sleeve," Opinion). The lack of UH pride afflicts both students and alumni alike. I grew up in Austin and attended the University of Texas before I joined the Navy. People who do not even have ties to that school wear its gear with pride. After my time in the Navy, I finished my degree at UH. I was amazed at the lack of spirit that the student population exhibited. I had a hard time finding anything UH outside of the bookstore on campus. Sporting my UH shirt, I took my two kids to several football games, and they still remember the mascot Shasta; I even showed them how to do the Cougar hand salute. After graduation, career opportunities lead my family and me to New York. It has taken me four years, but I am back in Houston. I recently took my daughter down to the campus and was very pleasantly surprised as to the overall appearance of the school grounds. As you get off the freeway, you get the felling that you are entering a great college. I hope that when my kids think of college, that they will think of Houston. At my workplace, the alumni from other schools have decorated their office space with their schools' logos. If you enter a Houston alumnus' office, you might see his diploma, but little else to show the world what a great university Houston is. My computer's wallpaper (from www.uhcougars.com) continuously shows my UH pride. I have other UH gear in my office and every day I proudly wear my graduation ring that I worked so hard for. I cannot wait until I can take my kids to a UH football game again. And with the new basketball head coach, I plan on getting season tickets for next year's basketball season as well. I cannot wait. Go Coogs! Christopher Brissette,
Cushy schedules To the editor: When I enrolled at UH in 1974 we were an independent athletic institution, meaning we didn't belong to a conference. During my first years at UH, we played North Carolina with Phil Ford and Walter Davis, South Carolina with Alex English, Southern California with Gus Williams, Louisville with Junior Bridgeman and Indiana State with Larry Bird. Since UH got involved in the Southwest Conference and Conference USA and the schedule got soft, victories have become scarce and recruits have escaped our program. Let's schedule some competition so we can attract and maintain more talent! Derek Tennyson,
