Opinion
Letters to the Editor Taxes and terror Justin Vann is only half-right about terror ("Reasons behind terror not simple," Opinion, Wednesday). When it comes to bad things happening, it's either an accident or someone does it on purpose. With the latter, there is only one entity to blame and that's the offending party, be it one man or many. America is you and me. America is one entity. Do you accept your part in terror as an American? If you do not, I have a solution for you: Quit paying taxes. Put your money where your mouth is. Allow me to address a few of the points in the column. The Saudis in question should have all been sent to the prison at Guantanamo Bay after 9/11. The sanctions against Iraq weren't former President Clinton's fault; they were Saddam Hussein's and the United Nations'. Coups and Contras? Do you remember the MIG warplanes in Nicaragua? I doubt it. Few do. We Americans have been hated since our inception. Nothing you or I can do will change that. American policy has simply become an excuse. I think one reason Americans blindly pay taxes is due to the fact that our dollars are equal-opportunity killers. U.S. law enforcement kills innocent people in their beds -- shoots them in the back. Our dollars go to nations that kill each other! That's covering all your bases. It's not economics. The Mexicans had their land stolen a long time ago, and all they want to do is work and feed their families, even though a fence is being built to keep them out. Thank God they don't believe in suicide bombings. There is an issue here we are all skirting. Who's gonna have the guts? Mark Cullivan,
