Staff Council eggs gone in a flash Egg hunt draws hundreds of UH faculty, staff members' kids by Dusti Rhodes
What do you get when you cross 500 kids with 5,000 Easter eggs? About a minute, according to Staff Council President Angie Shortt. "We started at 10:20, and by 10:21 all the eggs were gone," she said of the 14th annual Staff Council Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday morning. The hunt ended as soon as it was kicked off thanks to the children of UH faculty and staff. Shortt said Staff Council members arrived at Lynn Eusan Park at 8:30 a.m. in order to hide the 5,000 eggs that were swiftly snatched once the hunt began.
Jonathon Shoreland, 6, was one of about 500 kids who attended the Staff Council's 14th annual Easter Egg Hunt for the children of UH faculty and staff at Lynn Eusan Park on Saturday. Shortt's timeline wasn't an exaggeration. Associate English professor Ann Christensen said her sons, Wilson and Sam, arrived only a few minutes late, but still missed out on the hasty hunt. Wilson didn't seem too disappointed: When asked about his day, eggs were not the only things on his mind. "I played with my friends from school," said Wilson, who attends daycare at UH, as he dug through his Easter goodie bag. Thanks to the Staff Council, 500 children got bags filled with surprises in addition to the eggs. Sam said he liked the Easter goodies, too, but was less fond of the costumed Easter Bunny roaming the event. "I don't like that guy," he said. Staff member Karen Fuller said her son, Thomas, also had a good time. Thomas was unavailable for comment, as he was too busy filling up on orange juice provided by Chartwells and the Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management. "Everything was donated," said Dawnelle Prince, the
Staff Council's events chairwoman. Prince said the Faculty Senate donated
money for the 5,000 plastic eggs, which Staff Council members stuffed by
hand. Prince said Residential Life and Housing donated $100 worth of candy,
and the pledge class of Delta Sigma Pi donated its time with a face-painting
booth set up at the event.
