UH pitchers key sweep of UAB Cougar Sports Services The Cougars faced questions about their defense, their ability to produce runs and, most pointedly, their pitching. Houston answered a lot of those questions this weekend, completing the sweep of a three-game series against Conference USA foe Alabama-Birmingham with a 5-2 win over the Blazers on Sunday at Memorial Field in Birmingham. Game 3 was knotted at two apiece going into the top of the ninth. The Cougars busted through with a three-run inning, capped by an RBI double by sophomore Kevin Roberts, sealing the win for the Cougars.
Junior pitcher Garrett Mock showed the kind of stuff the Cougars have expected of him all season, giving up only three runs on five hits in seven and two thirds innings of work Sunday. Nathan Lindstrom/The Daily Cougar Houston (12-18, 5-4 in C-USA play) got a solid starting effort from sophomore Matt Varner, who allowed two runs on only four hits and struck out six Blazers in six innings. Roberts came on in relief of Varner, holding UAB scoreless with only one hit in three innings. Houston took Game 2, 8-0, thanks in large part to freshman starting pitcher Brad Lincoln, who had a complete-game shutout allowing no runners past second base. The Cougars took Game 1 of the series 9-3 behind seven and two-thirds innings of work by junior starter Garrett Mock, who allowed only three runs. Freshman outfielder Jake Stewart went 3-5 with two doubles, a run and an RBI. The Cougars had a total of 13 hits in the game. Send comments to dcsports@mail.uh.edu |
