Experts on Russia to meet at UH Cougar News Services A conference of experts on Siberia and the Russian Far East will take place for the first time in the Western Hemisphere beginning today -- and the meeting will take place at UH. The 10th biannual British Universities' Siberian Studies Seminar, which will focus on the region's past, present and future, will involve historians, cultural experts, linguists and geographers from around the world. Discussion topics, some of which will be given in Russian with no translation, will include Russia's oil and industry, far Eastern history and the Siberian economy. "Because Russia produced a third of the world's natural gas reserves and Houston is the energy capital, the association between the two is undeniable," UH political science professor Victor Mote, the conference's organizer, said in a release. Nearly 70 participants from a dozen countries are expected to attend, which would be the highest turnout of any BUSSS conference. The conference will run through Sunday at the University Hilton.
