C-USA taps UH for top honors Almazan wins diver of the year for 2004; Kiess biggest fish; Figueiredo best coach Cougar Sports Staff Cougar fans have had a chance this season to sample some of the finest imports available in the world. But few have been finer than the short but strong import from Mexico City. UH sophomore diver Azul Almazan earned Conference USA Diver of the Year this season after she led a young, talented diving squad to yet another solid season. ![]() Nathan Lindstrom/The Daily Cougar Sophomore diver Azul Almazan has plunged headfirst into the upper echelon of college divers. Almazan won the C-USA Diver of the Year award on Wednesday. Almazan finished first in the 3-meter springboard at the C-USA championships and qualified for the 2004 NCAA Championships, where she finished seventh at in the 3-meter and eighth in the 10-meter platform. But Almazan may soon have competition from a German import who is fast becoming one of the top divers in her own right. Freshman Anna Kiess, who also qualified for the NCAA Championships and won the C-USA Championships in the platform, took the C-USA Freshman of the Year award. And to complete the diving hat trick, head diving coach Jane Figueiredo earned C-USA Diving Coach of the Year. Figueiredo led her team to a 22nd place finish at the NCAA Championships and a 3rd place finish at the C-USA Championships. And if these imports do indeed improve with age, their opponents might soon be out of their class. Send comments to dcsports@mail.uh.edu |
